ORHAN KEMAL’S LIFE

Orhan Kemal,who was born in Adana in 1914, is one of our famous writers.He describes the social structure,worker -employer relationship and the daily struggles of people from industrialised Turkey.His stories and novels generally depict the lives of ordinary people trying to hold on to their dignity in conditions of poverty or deprivation.Orhan Kemal writes the novel of Hanımın Çiftliği,whose series adaptation we will examine in our project,to attract attention to people relationship in Çukurova in 1950s,the lives of people in Adana,poor peasants losing their lands, landowners becoming stronger more and more and the women workers trying to recreate their identity.In this work, he uses plain language and local speeches.This work presents many examples of Orhan Kemal’s own life.We can understand this from an interview made with Orhan Kemal’s son.

THE SMALL PART OF INTERVİEW WITH IŞIK ÖĞÜTÇÜ:

Interviewer: Do you think that Hanımın Çiftliği reflects your father’s life?

Öğütçü: Yes,I think so.This work mentions about Adana in 1950s.There are some similarities between my father’s life and Hanımın Çiftliği.For examples,the characters reflect some features of my family.

I: Oh really! Can you give me some examples?

Ö: Yes,I can.Muzaffer Bey resembles my grandfather,Ramazan resembles my uncle and Güllü’s mother Zehra resembles my mohter because Güllü’s mother has some problems born of financial difficulties like my mother.

I: The farm in the series is said to be as like as the farm in the novel.What do you think about this?

Ö: In my father’s novels,both characters and environment are described very well.When we watch the series,we see that the farm is almost same.

GENERAL INFORMANTION ABOUT THE NOVEL

Muzaffer Bey is an owner of a farm.In the farm,housework is done by Gülizar who is mistress of Muzaffer Bey.Ramazan,the nephew of Muzaffer Bey,decides to marry to a girl named Güllü but Muzaffer Bey falls in love with Güllü as soon as he sees Güllü.After her beloved Kemal’s death,Güllü also wants to marry to Muzaffer Bey instead of Ramazan because she aims to get rid of Gülizar and be the lady of the farm.After a while,Güllü marries to Muzaffer Bey and possesses the farm.She learns English and goes to Europe.She also changes her name as Serap.As Muzaffer Bey gets the land of peasants,all peasants especially Habib are hostile to Muzaffer Bey.One day,Habib kills Muzaffer Bey but nobody knows who is the killer.Afterwards,Habib provokes the peasants and sets fire to the farm.Meanwhile,Serap tries to run out of the farm but Habib catches her.Serap says that she won’t complain about him if he doesn’t kill her.Habib doesn’t kill her.In the end,Habib escapes and nobody can catch him.

THE SIMILARITIES AND THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE NOVEL AND THE SERIES

• PLOT

Both the novel and the series almost have the same plot but there are some differences:

• In the novel,before Güllü decides to come to the farm,Kemal dies but in the series,Güllü comes to the farm,marries to Muzaffer Bey and then Muzaffer Bey dies but Kemal is stil alive.

• In the novel,when Muzaffer Bey and Güllü marry,Gülizar leaves the farm but in the series,she stil Works in the farm.

• In the series,there is a character whose name is Halide,Muzaffer Bey’s sister.She doesn’t want Muzaffer Bey to marry to Güllü.She collogues and tries to manipulate people.She loves Kemal but in the novel,we can’t see such a character.

• In the novel,as we said Kemal dies before Güllü comes to the farm and Güllü cheats on Muzaffer Bey with Şerif Usta to whom Güllü gives a job in the farm.However,in the series,instead of Şerif Usta Güllü gives a job to Kemal and cheats on Muzaffer Bey with Kemal.

• In the novel,Muzaffer Bey sees the birth of his son and they gives the baby the name of Erdoğan.On the contrary,in the series,after Muzaffer Bey dies,the baby is born and Serap gives her baby the name of Muzaffer Bey.

• TIME AND PLACE

Although almost all series are filmed in İstanbul,Hanımın Çiftliği is filmed in Adana like in the novel.As actors and actresses speak with Adana accent,the characters in the novel are reflected successfully.

The story takes place in 1950s both in the novel and in the series.In the novel,Orhan Kemal so well describes 1950s that we feel as if we lived in 1950s.In the series,houses,cinema,club,streets,clothes,factories,phaetons in 1950s are presented very well.
 

• CHARACTERS

GÜLLÜ (ÖZGÜ NAMAL)

GÜLLÜ	NOVEL	SERIES
PHYSICAL FEATURES	She is a seventeen year old girl.She is a tall and buxom girl.She is very beautiful and sexy.	She seems older than seventeens.She is a short and slim woman.She has childish beauty.She looks innocent.
PERSONAL FEATURES	She has a strong personality.She is a stubborn person.She is ambitious.	She has a strong personality.She is a stubborn and ambitious person.

We think,Güllü’s personality is reflected very well by Özgü Namal.The personality of Güllü both in the novel and in the series is almost the same.However,in our opinion,when we look Güllü’s physical features,Özgü Namal isn’t a good choice because she is thirty years old,short and slim.

MUZAFFER BEY (MEHMET ASLANTUĞ)

Mehmet Aslantuğ generally plays in polite roles so at first we expected that he would not be able to play in a cruel man role in a successful way but he played very well as a bad character.He is a little young fort he role of Muzaffer Bey because in the novel,Muzaffer Bey is described as a older man.

KEMAL (CANER CİNDORUK)

handsome like Kemal and he reflects Kemal personality very well.

RAMAZAN (NECİP MEMİLİ)

In our opinion,Necip Memili isn’t a suitable actor fort he role of Ramazan because he should have been shorter and frailer than Güllü.He speaks Adana accent perfectly.In this point,he is a good choice.

 

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, novel of Hanımın Çiftliği is one of the best Works in Turkish Literature.Wacthing this work on television is pleasant so this project is a good opinion.Turkish people like watching television and series.We think that although there are some differences from the novel,the novel has been reflected in a successful way.
