Parallel to our learner outcomes for Turkish
Literature, our objective is to get to know
closer, a world famous expert, a social realist
writer of our literature. With this objective in
mind, we have included Orhan Kemal stories his
memoirs and photographs in our weekend homework.
As part of our homework, we wrote letters to the
characters in his stories.
The second step to get to know Orhan Kemal and
make acquaintance with his work, establish the
writer, written work connection better was to
visit the museum set up in his name on Thursday,
23 December, İstanbul Taksim'de, üç katlı bir
binada kurulmuş olan müzede, yazarın çoğu Ara
Güler tarafından çekilmiş yetmiş kadar
fotoğrafını, aile fotoğraflarını, kitaplarının
orijinal ilk baskılarını, yabancı dillere
çevrilmiş kitaplarını, özel mektuplarını,
hakkında yazılan tez ve makaleleri görme, Orhan
Kemal’in oğlu Işık Öğütçü tarafından anlatılan
anıları dinleme imkânına sahip olduk. We

the museum and watched the Orhan Kemal
documentary while sipping away on our coffees
and teas at the Ikbal Cafe.
The third step was to commemorate and understand
Orhan Kemal. Therefore his son, Işık Öğütçü was
with us to share a sincere and warm chat, in our
Irmak Cultural Centre on Friday, 24th December
2010 who assigned himself with passing on his
collection of immaterial heritage for future
generations. As a prelude, Grade 10 student
Beste Yaylı delivered a presentation to
introduce Orhan Kemal. Following the
presentation Mr Işık Öğütçü has embarked on the
podium and told us the writer Orhan Kemal and
the father Orhan Kemal through a collection of
his memories and research. At the end of the
day, Mr Öğütçü autographed his fathers books for
us.
